In case of incidents at the border the new technology will allow border guards to get to hard-to-reach points of the water border much faster, especially through the swampy areas.
The border police vehicle fleet has been replenished with two new units - Christy 463 PC hovercraft made by Christy Hovercraft company from Russia. This became possible due to the "EU for border security" - joint project between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine supported by the European Union.
The ministry's press service says that from 8 to 18 of September 14 Moldovan border officers were taking the training course on how to exploit new vehicles in the Costesti reservoir.
It is clarified that the cost of two hovercrafts exceeds the amount of 126 thousand euro.
“The Border Police continues to receive support from partners in their activities to control state borders at the waterfront and to prevent violations in the controlled area. Hovercraft can be used in any weather at all seasons and not only on the water, but also in swampy areas” - the border police said in a release.
Six out of fourteen police officers passed the classes and received instructor diplomas - in the future they will also be able to teach colleagues how to use the new technique.
A joint project between Moldova and Ukraine, supported by the EU, was created with the aim of improving the mobility of border guards of the two countries. The equipment provided will allow Moldovan police to get to any point on the water border between Moldova and Ukraine much faster in the case of any incidents. The total project budget is 4.4 million euro of which the EU contributed more than 3.5 million euro, and Moldova and Ukraine - about 900 thousand euros.
